DESCRIPTION

The Myrtillocactus geometrizans (Blue Candle Cactus) is a rare breathtaking species of cactus in the genus Myrtillocactus, native to central and northern Mexico.

Commonly know as the Blue Candle or Blue Myrtle this cactus is recorded under several different scientific names: Cereus Geometrizan, Myrtillocactus Grandiareolatus or Myrtillocactus Geometrizans (Mart. Ex Pfeiff.)

The Blue candle is a slow growing cactus, which grows considerably faster with age. The flowers of this attractively thick cactus are creamy white with a pleasant fragrance, 2–2.5 cm diameter. Believe it or not, but The Myrtillocactus geometrizans (Blue Candle Cactus) also yields edible dark purple berries when the plant reaches maturity.

The Blue Candle (Myrtillocactus) needs specific sunlight to grow optimally, too much and it can burn, too little and it will remain dormant. Cactus Vision suggests placing this cactus in a well lit area (minimum of 3 hours of direct sun through a window) if growing indoors to promote growth.

In terms of outdoor captivity, do not expose the young plants to direct full sun; keep them in a well lit shaded area until they reach maturity and then shift to a location where they receive half day full sun if desired. A position where they receive morning OR afternoon sun is suggested rather than full day sun - this helps to avoid burning during atypical heatwaves for the current climate it is accustom to. Avoiding positions where this plant receives full day sun also helps the The Myrtillocactus geometrizans (Blue Candle Cactus) retain its frosted blue colouring.

  • WATER: Water generously when soil is dry in Autumn/Summer/Spring, seldom in Winter.

OUTDOORS: Absolutely, position your plant in half day sun, a bright shaded area or full day sun. We recommend watering plants in full day sun more frequently in the peak of Summer (biweekly - weekly); this regular watering over summer helps prevent sunburn in extreme weather.

INDOORS: This plant is comfortable in well lit indoor areas - preferably close to a window (preferably 2-3+ hours of direct sun on a sunny day)

NB: The most affordable and efficient way to measure if it is time to water your cacti is by using a water meter. When the meter reads “DRY” its time to water again. Remember, over watering Cacti is the main cause of death.Head to our online store to buy your water meter today!
